HKNGIS Members visited ASTRI

A visit to the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was organized by HKNGIS for its members in the afternoon of Wednesday, November 12, 2014. ASTRI is conveniently located at the Hong Kong Science Park in Shatin. The date of visit was arranged on a short notice, as HKNGIS members had an urgent need to learn more about ASTRI’s latest work on 5G and related Next-Generation-Internet development and applications.

The HKNGIS delegation, led by Chairman Dr Ng Nam, was very excited to be received by their CEO Mr Frank Tong, who had squeezed time from his tight schedule to meet with the delegation. Dr Ng gave a short introduction of HKNGIS, while Mr Tong, who had just taken up his new role of CEO of ASTRI in September 2014, gave a brief introduction on the mission of ASTRI and his vision as CEO on the future development of ASTRI.

We were then received by Dr Justin Chuang, Vice President and Group Director of Communications Technologies Group and several members of his team, including Mr Alex Mui, Dr Vincent Lau and their colleagues, who had given detailed presentations on works of ASTRI that were particularly related to our Society’s mission, i.e. the promotion of Next-Generation-Internet development in Hong Kong. The demos on their Internet of Things application development were very impressive. We could appreciate that ASTRI had devoted a lot of focus on the related development of Next Generation Internet in Hong Kong.

HKNGIS welcomed the opportunity to visit ASTRI. It was a most informative and interesting site-visit and we could see that were a lot of common interest between our Society and ASTRI. We would also like to thank their Mr Angus Sam for making possible the arrangement of this excellent site visit.
