HKNGIS Members visited MTR

Through the liaison by our Vice-Chairman Mr John Lee, 15 members of HKNGIS visited the MTR (Mass Transit Railway Corporation) Master Control Room located atTsing Yi station on May 27, 2014. This Master Control Room is the consolidated control room after the merging of Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation into MTR.

Our delegation was received by Mr Thomas Chow, Senior Construction Engineer – Signalling and Communications and Mr Ricko Lor, Design Engineer-Communications of MTR Corporation. We were first given an introduction to the operation and management of the Master Control room in their meeting room, and we were informed how this control room needed to function in order to provide the Hong Kong population with the most efficient transport system. Then we were taken for a most impressive site visit inside the Operation Control Centre (OCC) Room, where we could see the huge wall-mounted display-screen panels with various warning indicators and we were briefed on the importance of facilities there in enabling efficient and safe operations of the MTR system. We were then taken upstairs for a visit to the Visitor’s Gallery, where we could have a bird’s eye view into the OCC Room. Finally we were led to visit the OCER/KBER (Operation Centre Equipment Room) where we could see a huge array of computer and communication equipment.

The MTR is serving the Hong Kong population with a modern and advanced mass-transit railway systems that moves many people from one location in Hong Kong to another in the most efficient and reliable manner. It is something that Hong Kong could not live without. Everyone in Hong Kong counts on its successful operation to meet our daily schedules on time. We thanked MTR for the opportunity to visit this advanced operation system. It surely was a most impressive visit within one and a half hours.
