HKNGIS Members visited The Smart Grid of China Light and Power

HKNGIS members had a very interesting technical site visit to the Smart Grid Program of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP) on February 20, 2012. We were received by Mr Andrew Lo, Senior Engineer of CLP. After greeted by Andrew at the entrance hall at their Shamshuipo Centre in Kowloon, we were given an elaborated guided tour in their Smart Grid Experience Centre.

We had heard from Andrew that CLP is committed to various green initiatives to reduce the carbon emission in their mission of providing sufficient electrical energy for consumption in the Kowloon and the New Territories areas. We were most impressed by their model of large-scale windmills that they could be considering to set up in the sea near Hong Kong. And they are also committed to provide reliable and fast-response electrical power supply to serve the Hong Kong community.

We believe that electricity will continue to be, for the foreseeable future, an essential element for the support and sustainable development of the Next Generation Internet. The various green initiatives that the CLP Smart Centre had demonstrated are most commendable. And we should of course bear in mind to reduce our consumption of electricity, as we venture into various future developments of next-generation Internet technologies.
